Captain America: The Avengers Is Off To A Great Start

While we find it kinda creepy that Samuel L. Jackson shows up at the end of each prequel to 2012′s The Avengers (Iron Man, Thor, Capt. America), this telling of the Captain America story works because the story is driven by the plot as opposed to special effects. Don’t expect any gratuitous crashing robots: Marvel’s done a erm, marvellous job of selecting director Joe Johnston to helm this franchise, based on his work with period adventure films The Rocketeer and October Sky. And it shows in the attention to detail on the set: from the outfits and make-up of 1940s ball-busting female lead Hayley Atwell to the stunning plane and motor chase scenes that meld the old and new, the Director of Photography has surely outdone himself on this one and Marvel has much to be chuffed about. The gist of the story revolves around the Nazi break-off faction Hydra and it’s ominous leader Johann Schmidt a.k.a. Red Skull, who harnesses an ancient power to stockpile in anticipation of a full-scale takeover of Europe. Naturally, Captain America, played with much subtlety by Chris Evans is there to stop him. The ending sort of lapses into The Avengers mode with Samuel L. Jackson (a teaser that doesn’t really tease much) but you can always hotfoot it out of the cinema before that.
